The Test and Evaluation Simulator (TES) is a mid to low fidelity simulator for rapid prototyping research and reconfigurable to represent any type of aircraft, UAS, or planetary research. The simulator has a panorama visual system for piloted operation. The simulation research included piloted aviation, spacecraft handling qualities, Uninhabited Aircraft Systems, and Rotorcraft flight decks.
The TES was originally created as the Lunar Flight Deck (LFD). It was created to support the Spacecraft Handling Qualities Simulation and the LaRC Lunar Exploration Strategic Advocacy and Investment projects. The cockpit was intended to identify ways to improve manual piloting of the Lunar Lander space vehicle when landing on the lunar surface. It was also used to assess the impact associated with window size, synthetic vision, enhanced vision, engine thrust, and control system. The TES has the following features:
- Reconfigurable Simulator (Rapid –Prototyping)
- Currently configured to represent Altair Lunar Lander
- Two large LCD s
- 1 THC and 1 RHC
- 1 Electronic Flight Bag
- 1 PC tablet
- Visual system: 135 degrees Horizontal by 67.5 degrees Vertical Panorama.
- Databases: ISS and Lunar South Pole and Shackleton Crater area
