The Research Flight Deck (RFD) is a conceptual flight deck representing a next generation flight deck configuration. The RFD has the following features:
- Hybrid B-787 and B-777/MD-11/A-320 functionality
- Panorama Display System (200H x 40V deg FOV); 5-channel visual scene allows cross-cockpit viewing
- 2 Crew and 3 Observers seats
- Full mission functionality; Operates fixed base or on the CMF motion base
- Overhead Panel, Main Instrument Panel, Mode Control Panel
- Control Aisle Stand with 757-type throttle quadrant
- All instrumentation generated by OpenGL graphics running on Linux computers.
- Two Heads Up Displays (HUD) – Rockwell Collins HGS-6700
- Pilot and Copilot digital 2-axis side arm electric control loaders manufactured by Wittenstein
- Pilot and Copilot hydraulic rudder pedals manufactured by McFadden Systems
- Control Display Units for Guidance and Navigation Flight Management
- Audio cue provided by digital sound system
- Capable of interfacing selected flight systems for testing (hardware-in-the-loop)
The current focus of the RFD is on the evaluation and refinement of research concepts in an advanced high fidelity, full-systems flight-operations environment. Recent studies in the RFD include NextGen Aviation Safety, Airspace Systems, Airportal, Orion avionics display and control design, Lunar Lander, and spacecraft rendezvous and docking simulations.
